Carole Hamilton - Debenhams - Independent, Expert Reviews at ProductSifter - We hunt down the best so you don't have to
On the big day your dress has got to be just right. Carole Hamilton, author of the Sublime Wedding and a former editor of You and Your Wedding magazine for more than 13 years, picks Britain's best places to buy. Click to view Top 5 Wedding Dress Shops.

Best High Street (Debenhams)

Wedding Dress Shops - Debenhams | SmallFor brides on a budget there is currently nowhere better on the British high street than Debenhams for style, service and quality. A Jasper Conran designed wedding dress for just £250 - who could ask for more?

Wedding Dress Shops - Debenhams | SmallNot everyone wants to spend a fortune on their wedding dress but I’m betting that even if you’re on a budget you still want to look gorgeous and if the dress is by a well-known designer, then even better.

The Designers at Debenhams range is a huge success story and nowhere more so than in the bridal department.

Jasper Conran and the design duo Pearce Fionda have both got current collections in store and, with a new range coming out in 2007 by Kylie’s favourite, Julien MacDonald, you will have no less than three designer names to choose from.

There are 20 different wedding dress styles across the ranges and they are available in 24 stores nationwide. Sizes range from 6-20. Dresses take about 10 days to arrive from the date of ordering.

Favourite Frock

Wedding Dress Shops - Debenhams | MediumMy particular favourite at the moment is the J by Jasper Conran halterneck dress, seen here, which is covered with tiny beads. It’s so pretty and looks much more expensive than the £250 price tag.

The shopping experience in Debenhams isn’t the same as you get in one of the big name bridal designers but the changing rooms are roomy and you don’t have to make an appointment, although be prepared to wait on a busy Saturday.

You probably won’t get the one-to-one attention from the sales staff as you would in a bridal boutique (but that’s not always a bad thing) and there’s a good range of sample sizes. There isn't an in-store alterations service but the assistants are happy to recommend local companies who will be able to help.

Accessories Galore

Wedding Dress Shops - Debenhams | SmallDebenhams stock a full range of bridesmaids' dresses, for youngsters and adults, as well as accessories such as tiaras, headdress and handbags. While you’re there you can also choose your bridal lingerie, find a waistcoat for your groom as well as plan your gift list.

Peta Hunt, the fashion director of You & Your Wedding magazine is a big fan of the Debenhams collection. “The dresses are stylish and great value for money. I’ve already had a sneak preview of the new Julien MacDonald range and the dresses are gorgeous.”
