Jonathan Ungoed-Thomas - CatEye Lights - Independent, Expert Reviews at ProductSifter - We hunt down the best so you don't have to
To survive city streets on two wheels you need the right kit. Sunday Times reporter and bike nut, Jonathan Ungoed-Thomas, lists the 'must haves' for the urban cyclist Click to view Top 5 Urban Bike Accessories.

Best Lights (Cateye EL-210 & LD1000, £40)

Urban Bike Accessories - CatEye Lights | MediumYou need to be seen as a city cyclist, and there’s no better way to do it than with these powerful, light-weight lights. They are easy to mount, a doddle to maintain and the batteries last for weeks. The glare they give off has to be seen to be believed, ensuring drivers will spot you early. Both offer a flashing mode. Superb.

Super Bright

The Cateye EL-210 runs on four AA batteries and boasts up to 50 hours run time. It has five LED bulbs and the brightness is stunning. Its' lens uses something CatEye calls “opticube” technology which maximizes the use of the light. I'm not sure I understand the science but it works: you can be seen at a distance and from the side at something approaching right angles.

Some London cyclists mount two EL-210s on the handlebars, one in flash mode and one on permanent beam. It's not Cateye’s brightest front light, but it is well-suited to the urban biker whose priority is not so much to see in the dark but to be seen.

The EL-210 can be removed from its mounting at the touch of a button and runs for up to 100 hours on flash and 50 on constant beam.

Long Life

Urban Bike Accessories - CatEye Lights | SmallFor years the sleek looking Cateye LD-600 was the rear light of choice among couriers and other experienced urban cyclists, but the new LD-1000 is better. With something approaching double the candle power of the LD-600, it's the light to buy if visibility is your priority. It is so bright it can actually be seen during the day.

The barnacle-shaped LD-1000, boasts two rows of five LEDs which can be independently operated. This means you can have one on constant and one of flash mode, for example. It also means you can turn one off if a friend is cycling behind, which - given its power - is essential.

The LD-1000 is not as sleek as the 600 but remains small enough to slip into a pocket when parked up. It takes two AA batteries and will run up to 50 hours on constant and up to 100 in flash mode. Buy one today and tomorrow not driver will come near!

Pros:
- Super Bright
- Flash Options
- Long Life
- Easy to fit and remove
- Water Resistant

Cons:
- Risk of Dazzling Fellow Cyclists
- Not the Cheapest
- Not the Smallest
