Best for Learners (Robert August Soft-Top) |
 |
The 8’4” Robert August Soft-Top by Surftech is the ultimate in beginner’s boards, combining its forgiving Soft-Top technology with a proven outline and bottom design. Big enough to learn the basics on, short enough to turn and trim as skills increase. If you’re just starting out, buy one. |

No question here. No point in even talking about it.
The guys at Surftech revolutionised the market with the introduction of the Soft-Top line and for the beginner there’s no need to look further.
Soft foam deck, no points (except the fins and even they’re dulled) progressive rails and rigid bottom with enough performance built in to take you from fledgling kook to “I can catch my own waves, hop to my feet and pump down-the-line”, which means the first couple of years of your surf life.
Yes, regular boards are shiny and cool. They look way better on the beach. Which is where you’ll be spending most of your time if you don’t start on a Softop.
My second choice here is the 7’10 Surf Diva Daisy May. A pretty hybrid designed with girls in mind but a fine trainer if you’re nimble.
If you're buying for young kids go shorter still. The boards I've picked are for adults. For a 10-year-old, drop down to a six foot stick.
