Best Longboard (Reynolds Yater High Performance)

Surfboards - Reynolds Yater HighPerformance | SmallThe 9’1” High Performance, shaped by Reynolds Yater, gives you the best of both worlds longboard-wise: the rail profile and narrow tail width to carve turns, plus a generous nose outline that makes hanging ten (or at least a clean five) a breeze. A great all-rounder.

Yes, I know that a lot of folk associate longboards with rosy-tinted nostalgia, but the truth is high performance knows no nose width limitations. Surfers who choose to ride longboards want to ride those longboards well. And a lot of those who choose longboards ride their longboards most of the time. This makes versatility a must. And that’s why for all-around efficiency I’d pick the 9’1” Yater.

Hang Ten

Surfboards - Reynolds Yater HighPerformance | MediumSure, I could go with a Donald Takayama Noserider when it’s two-foot or a narrow Randy French HP in barrels, but if I wanted a board that I could snap-turn, carve off the bottom, noseride - both tip ride and speed - in waves from two-foot to ten, it’s hard to beat the Yater.

Fairly generous nose width (17.6") helps planing in the small stuff but the slightly boxed rail and relatively narrow tail (14.25”) translates into carving performance when the swell comes up. No tube rider, but then few longboards are. But for all-around graceful, powerful, aesthetically pleasing surfing, this is the stick.

My second choice longboard would be LJ Richards Model by Donald Takayama. Wider nose, single-fin, more trad but still quick.
