Best Hybrid (Piranha by Rusty) |
 |
The 6’10” Piranha by Rusty is definitely a high-performance hybrid, combining the high planing speed of its wide, lower-rockered design with a lively bottom curve. The result is a short utility board that’s fast, loose and easy to ride in just about anything. Everyone should have one. |

Let’s make something clear: we’re not talking beer-belly boards here — no “mini-longboards” that are, at best, a bad compromise going in either direction.
Today’s hybrid market is one of the fastest-growing, most progressive design genres. When you think hybrid, imagine a wider, slightly fuller-nosed, less-rockered, board that facilitates good, efficient surfing in virtually any condition you’ll encounter in your everyday surfing life.
Looked at in this light it’s a wonder that every surfer on earth (at least those who don’t live in Puerto Escondido, Mexico or Bali) doesn’t ride one.
There are small hybrids and big ones, post-modern and retro, multi-finned and single. But if you could only ride one I’d choose the Piranha by Rusty Preisendorfer. |
Surf Must-Have |
A three-fin thruster set-up, at 22" wide, with a 14.8” wide nose the Piranha will eat up anything even resembling a down-the-line ride. Yet at 6’10” it not only makes bigger surfers feel frisky, but skates like a dream regardless of weight. Speed, drive and manoeuvrability for the real world.
Second choice here would be the 8’0” Magic Fish by Gordon and Smith. An eight-foot, floaty swallowtail that thinks it’s a 5’10” Fish. A classic. |
