John Lucero Jester

No one knows skateboards better than Bud Stratford of Concrete Wave, one of the world's leading skate magazines. We asked him to put together five dream rigs. Here they are. Click to view Top 5 Skateboards.

Best Retro Setup (John Lucero Jester)

Skateboards - John Lucero Jester | SmallBlack Label/Emergency John Lucero
Jester deck, same brand Blood Spot
wheels, and Independent 169
trucks: this is the gotta-have-it
skateboard for everybody
over 30 this season.

Skateboards - John Lucero Jester | MediumLet me be absolutely frank about this: I work for a skateboard magazine. One of the perks of my job is that I get free skateboards to ride. Well, last month I actually spent my hard-earned cash on this setup. And, let me tell you, this is the best money I have spent in a couple of years.

Another quality deck from the Paul Schmitt woodworks, it features John Lucero’s graphics from when he rode for Schmitt Stix in the late 1980s on a slightly updated old-school shape.

Retro Heaven

Skateboards - John Lucero Jester | SmallMeasuring in at 9.5in wide and 33.5in long, it has an extremely functional concave, and kicktail and kicknose that suits it well to vertical halfpipes, large concrete bowls, mini ramps - even some classic street skating.

The full-board stain really brings out the colours in the graphics so you might consider putting some rails on this deck to preserve that artwork for as long as possible.

The Blood Spot wheels look and ride a lot like the old OJII Elites from the late ‘80s. They are quite wide, which not only gives them a very retro look, but also ensures that they are a very smooth and grippy wheel that will slide virtually on a whim.

The only trucks that could complement such a classic setup would be the Independent 169, which still has some of the best turning and grinding characteristics in all of skateboarding, from a manufacturer that has over 25 years of experience in building world-class products.

Typical Prices - £95-£100/$180-$210
