GS Fibreflex

No one knows skateboards better than Bud Stratford of Concrete Wave, one of the world's leading skate magazines. We asked him to put together five dream rigs. Here they are. Click to view Top 5 Skateboards.

Best Longboard (G&S Fibreflex)

Skateboards - GS Fibreflex | MediumWhenever you think of hard-carving, responsive classic longboards, the first board that most people bring to mind is the tried-and-true G&S Fibreflex, even though it's a throwback to skateboarding’s golden years of the late 1970s.

The reissued Fibreflexes, however, still incorporate features and technologies that keep them on the leading edge of skateboard innovation.

The Fibreflex is a vertically laminated wooden deck, with a fibreglass/epoxy skin on the top and bottom. This novel construction gives the deck its wonderfully snappy and responsive flex, while keeping deadweight to an absolute minimum.

Carving Perfection

Skateboards - GS Fibreflex | MediumIn the 1970s, Fibreflex decks set the high water mark for quality and innovation and many a downhill race was won on one. And today, because G&S has wisely reissued an updated Fibreflex deck - that stays true to the original in almost every regard - a whole new generation is taking advantage of the opportunity to experience this amazing ride for themselves.

This deck is best set up with wide, stable trucks and very large, soft, high-traction wheels. Holey Trucks is a homegrown UK manufacturer that makes extremely strong trucks with beautiful, flowing lines. They also feature lightening holes, and a fully polished finish for eye-popping good looks. They are not only beautiful, they are infinitely functional.

Skateboards - GS Fibreflex | SmallAs for the wheels, the Retro Zig-Zags are wide, tall wheels that feature a brand new urethane formula (called the “Reflex”) that is faster and grippier than anything on the market today. And they come in a variety of very cool colours to boot.

If it's a board for cruising about town you are after - this is it. Because of its stablity, it is also a great board to learn or re-learn skating on.

Typical prices - £95/£110 / $180-£210
