The Ultimate (Ping G5 ProLaunch 65) |
 |
If you play off a single-figure handicap, the Ping G5 ProLaunch will meet all your demands. It comes from a company that has proven itself over the years to be one of the best, and if you really know how to play the game and want to get the most from your swing, this driver is the one to go for. |

It's the kit for experienced Tiger wannabes who are demanding of their equipment. In the 1990s I launched a magazine called Golf Buyer, which reviewed all new clubs, and for quality of manufacture, three companies stood out - Ping, Titleist and Mizuno. None of these manufacturers jump on bandwagons and will only bring out a new model when they are sure they have got it right.
Ping was the brainchild of Karsten Solheim, who invented the face-balanced putter, and whose Eye2 club started the trend for peripherally-weighted, cavity backed irons. The company remains a family business and recognised the need for custom-fitting long before the rest.

Despite this, it lagged behind in the driver stakes until producing the G5, which suggests that they spent a lot of time studying what else was out there and getting things right.
The club features the maximum allowable head size (460cc) in which the centre of gravity has been lowered, which gives a higher launch angle and lower spin rate (the combination to which we all aspire) for greater distance. The Grafalloy ProLaunch shaft option adds to an already impressive bit of kit and Ping offers six different grip sizes, in a range of styles, so getting the right one should not be a problem.
