Nike Sasquatch

Martin Vousden - Nike Sasquatch - Independent, Expert Reviews at ProductSifter - We hunt down the best so you don't have to
He can't guarantee you Tiger Woods status but Martin Vousden, a former editor of Today's Golfer and one of the UK's top golf jounalists, can guide you to the right gear. Here he selects five of the best drivers Click to view Top 5 Golf Drivers.

The Funkiest (Nike Sasquatch)

Golf Drivers - Nike Sasquatch | MediumAs Jeremy Clarkson demonstrates so vividly on Top Gear, some cars are simply cool. The same goes for golf clubs. And the Nike folks, who gain kudos by having Tiger Woods inextricably linked to their kit, know cool when they see it. So if you want a driver that's straight from the fridge, this is the one. And it works too.

It looks different, with a grey/yellow paint combination and the fact that it’s almost as long from front to back as it is from heel to toe – but if it didn’t also work extremely well, the Sasquatch would have quickly disappeared. Golfers remain, by and large, small "c" conservative so in order for something looking like this to sell in numbers, which it does, it has to prove itself.

In essence, the different shape allows the centre of gravity to be pushed back, which gives a higher launch angle, and therefore greater distance. The clubhead is also less likely to twist, allowing the golfer to find the middle of the clubface more often. American magazine Golf Digest, which knows its onions, voted it the Driver of the Year for 2006.

Golf Drivers - Nike Sasquatch | MediumA number of golfers persist in the belief that a low, boring flight trajectory will gain them extra distance but this is not true, especially in winter when there is less roll once the ball returns to earth. Because of this, many will opt for the 10.5° loft option but if you get the chance to try before you buy, have a go with the 'lucky' 13° model - you may be pleasantly surprised at the extra distance you gain.

Finally, though, you get a club that works extremely well but has the added, almost impossible to quantify element of "cool". You may not be able to measure it, but you know it when it's there and with this Nike, it's there in spades.
