Metropolitan Museum of Art

People think of the Big Apple as an adult place but it also rocks for kids. For three years TV news journalist Carolyn Rogalsky edited the Calendar of Events for New York Families. Here she picks five great day trips for kids Click to view Top 5 New York Outings for Kids.

Best Museum (Metropolitan Museum of Art)

New York Outings for Kids - Metropolitan Museum of Art | MediumIf your kids balk at the mere mention of “art museum” it’s well worth trying out more alluring terminology to draw them through the door of this vast treasure trove. At two million square feet it's the largest art museum in the western hemisphere, with something for everyone, big or small.

Boys will be intrigued by a “Knights Palace” where armor, banners, and weapons are on display (and which is what initially sold my children on the place). Girls are likely to be lured by the “Costume Institute,” with over 30,000 costumes and accessories, which this museum also delivers.

New York Outings for Kids - Metropolitan Museum of Art | SmallWhatever you do, don’t miss a trip to this spectacular collection of over three million works of art, including the most comprehensive collection of American art in the world. And, except for Sundays, the museum is stroller friendly, so you can cover lots of ground with ease.

As with most big New York City draws, there is always a party happening right out front. In this case, the steps to the museum serve as a favourite meeting spot, a quick food cart picnic location, a great sidewalk shopping venue, and, often, top-notch street performer stage. Plan to spend a bit of time hanging out right here.

Kid-Friendly Hot Spots

New York Outings for Kids - Metropolitan Museum of Art | SmallOn entering, be sure to stop at the front desk to learn about any family tours or art workshops that may be taking place. Because the place can be overwhelming, consider picking up one of the printed family guides, “art hunts”, or audio tours geared for families with kids. Any of these excellent options can serve as your road map and help steer you to the kid-friendly “hot spots”, including the roof garden; the Egyptian Temple of Dendur; the Arms and Armour Equestrian Court; the Costume Gallery with its display of historic and stylish gowns; Galleries for Musical Instruments, and of course, the excellent Met Store, which is chock-full of inspiring and educational kid stuff.

Location: 1000 Fifth Avenue at 82nd St. Hours are 9:30am to 5:30pm, Tuesday through Thursday, and Sundays; 9:30am to 9pm, Fridays and Saturdays.
