Best Family Restaurant (Bubby’s) |
 |
In a city with thousands of restaurants, choosing just the right one can be an overwhelming challenge. For families, “rightness” comes in the form of Bubby’s, a Tribeca establishment which has been on the scene since 1990, and is as American as apple pie. |
| |
In fact, Bubby’s got its start as a pie company, but quickly expanded its American comfort food offerings to include classics like bacon and eggs, pancakes, macaroni cheese, barbecue ribs and chicken, burgers, as well as more sophisticated fare including fancy salads (Arugula and Parmesan with Roasted Pears) and grilled fish. Side dishes run the gamut from baked beans to sautéed spinach to corn on the cob. Each order comes with the restaurant's homemade buttermilk biscuits, which are light, fluffy and satisfying.

According to the founder (and former chef) Ron Silver, almost everything on the menu is made from scratch daily. Silver himself travelled around the country seeking out authentic family recipes from Nebraska and Arkansas farms, Brooklyn brownstones and the Salt Lake City suburbs.

Mile-High Apple Pie |
In addition to kid-pleasing soft drinks, there’s a full range of ales and intoxicating cocktails for adults to choose from. And naturally, the kid-welcoming waiters will urge you to save room for pie. Since my children have trouble in the saving department, we always begin our meal with pie! Mile High Apple Pie -- yum!

Prices are reasonable. An average main course is $15; a typical kids’ meal is $4. For Sunday dinners, kids under 8 eat free. Open daily for breakfast, lunch, dinner. During the weekend brunch is served, and reservations are not accepted. This is the only time you can expect a wait, but it will be a friendly one. Credit cards accepted.
The original Bubby’s is located at 120 Hudson St at North Moore St There is now a Brooklyn offshoot at 1 Main Street at Water Street in Dumbo, which is also well worth a visit. Check out their website: bubbys.com.
