 Is London the restaurant capital of the world? That was the title of a conference I attended in about 2000. There was a lengthy debate, somebody coughed politely, and before we hit the Champagne and canapés, the judges concluded that New York was the restaurant capital; but London offered more variety. |

| How times have changed. Oh, London still offers more variety than anywhere else, but now we also have world-class quality to match. When Jacques Chirac made his infamous comment in 2005 about food in Britain, rather than getting angry, most Londoners simply found themselves asking, "what century is he living in?" |
