Best Way to Do Vegas Cheap (Fremont Street)

Las Vegas - Fremont Street | MediumThe dazzling neon lights of Fremont Street are to Las Vegas what the Eiffel Tower is to Paris – an instantly recognized landmark famous around the world. No visit to Vegas is complete without a trip to the area known as Glitter Gulch, but for travelers on a budget, this is the best place to stay as well.

This is where Las Vegas began. There was gambling on games of chance along Fremont Street as far back as 1906, long before the Flamingo Hotel was a glimmer in the eye of mobster Bugsy Siegel.

The area’s reputation as a blue-collar neighborhood persists. The hotels that line Fremont, such as the Four Queens, Las Vegas Club, Binion’s and The Golden Nugget, have all the neon dazzle of their Las Vegas Blvd. counterparts, but room rates are lower and mid-priced dining opportunities are more plentiful. Low buy-ins are standard in the casinos here as well, making it possible to enjoy slots and table games for a fraction of what it would cost on the Strip.

Las Vegas - Fremont Street | MediumTwo decades ago five blocks of Fremont Street were converted into a pedestrian mall, making travel between hotels less dangerous. Everything here is within walking distance, so there’s no need to rent a car. A 90-foot canopy overhead plays free light and sound shows every hour. Away from the resorts, there are additional entertainment offerings at such area pubs as Hennessey’s and Hogs and Heifers.
