Best Old-School Experience (AJ’s Steakhouse) |
 |
Vegas hasn’t been the same since control passed from organized crime to publicly held corporations. When the mob ruled, Vegas was really Vegas. And if you want an evening to give a flavour of what it was like way back then, AJ's is the place to start. |
| |
| In those days the town had more class, visitors still dressed up for dinner and a show, and the bosses treated low rollers and high rollers alike with the same courtesy. |
| |
It’s impossible to turn back time, but there are places where that old-school vibe still exists. Start with dinner at AJ’s Steakhouse at the Hard Rock Hotel, which sports retro décor so convincing you expect Dean Martin to pop in for a Porterhouse.
Forget your cholesterol for a night and enjoy a large cut of prime rib or filet mignon, so tender you may not need the steak knife. Sides such as salads and mashed potatoes are dressed and seasoned.

| The Scintas |
Next, head over to the Sahara Resort to catch a performance by The Scintas, a quartet of singers/musicians/impressionists/comics with the kind of talent and showmanship that built Vegas’s reputation for live entertainment.
|
| |
Siblings Frank, Joe and Chrissi Scinta are joined on stage by Peter O’Donnell, who was asked to fill in for two weeks when the group’s drummer left, and stayed for 16 years. With nods to Broadway, country, rock, r&b, blues and American standards, the Scintas’ musical stylings are all over the map, and delightfully so. Songs and skits are launched in rapid succession – just try to find another show that would follow “Stairway to Heaven” with “I Will Always Love You.”
