Mammoth

No-one knows powder better than Tom Winter, senior editor at Freeskier Magazine and a top action-sports-adventure-travel photographer and writer. Here he picks North America's best powder resorts Click to view Top 5 US Powder Ski Resorts.

Best For Young Families (Mammoth)

US Powder Ski Resorts - Mammoth | SmallLove skiing powder but blessed (or is that saddled?) with kids who are not quite up to it yet? Then head to Mammoth. It's a resort where mum and dad can get into the deep stuff, while an excellent ski school looks after the children on gental slopes near by. Mommoth has something for everyone.

On the eastern slope of one of North America’s most dramatic mountain ranges, the Sierra Nevada, Mammoth is known for intense storms that come in, dump 7 feet of snow, and leave everyone in town digging out for days.

Time your visit right and you may just have the perfect excuse to miss your flight back home. After all, how could you possibly find the rental car when it’s buried under all that snow?

US Powder Ski Resorts - Mammoth | MediumWith expansive terrain, plenty of high-speed lifts to get you there and everything from tree skiing to wide open bowls, Mammoth serves up everything a powder skier could want, including those infamous storms.

Better yet, the mountain’s vast amount of terrain is perfect for all types and ages of skiers. This is the kind of resort where you’d take your family, because there’s something for everyone.

That adage holds true for the town of Mammoth Lakes, which offers a wide variety of accommodations to fit every budget as well as everything from diners serving up breakfast around the clock to fancy steakhouses.

The only drawback is that the mountain is a bit difficult to get to (Reno is the closest major airport). But that’s not a drawback at all when you’ve got 7 feet of new snow and don’t feel like sharing.

Vital Statistics

Hot Tip
US Powder Ski Resorts - Mammoth | MediumRent a car. The resort is perched above the town of Mammoth Lakes, and you’ll want to be able to check out the town even if your accommodations are up at the ski area.
