Best for Food (Porthminster)

Cornish Family Beaches - Porthminster | SmallThis beach, near St Ives, is ideal for families with safe paddling even at high tide. Best of all though is the Porthminster Café, a fabulous beach-side eaterie with great food, views and staff.

The restaurant is situated just above the beach so, while you and your friends can sit on the decked area to eat and drink, the children can play within view on the beach below. Even the decor inside the Porthminster Café (01736 795352) is relaxed and child-friendly with its blue and white checked tablecloths, yellow plastic wine buckets and model windmills on the tables.

Cornish Family Beaches - Porthminster | MediumThe Good Food Guide calls it "an oasis of taste and visual beauty" but the atmosphere is far from pretentious. If children are fussy, the staff are willing to adjust the menu. The creative lunch snacks are all under £10 and the mouth-watering main courses in the evening are around £15 to £20. The wine list is imaginative and the cafe concentrates on serving local fish and produce.

The backdrop to the beach and cafe is of palm trees and sub-tropical shrubs which provides a Mediterranean atmosphere, while the white sand attracts not just holidaymakers but also sand sculptors.

Cornish Family Beaches - Porthminster | SmallHowever, St Ives in the summer months can be a nightmare for traffic and parking. The easiest way to have a stress-free lunch is to leave the car at the Park & Ride in Lelant, take a ten- minute, scenic, old-fashioned train ride to St Ives and walk five minutes down to the beach from the station.

The trains run regularly in the summer months and make the whole experience more of an adventure. Book the restaurant well ahead because it is so popular, even out of season. The Time Out Eating & Drinking in Great Britain & Ireland 2005 guide says it’s "highly recommended".
