Andrew Alderson - Polzeath - Independent, Expert Reviews at ProductSifter - We hunt down the best so you don't have to
Andrew Alderson, chief reporter of the Sunday Telegraph, has lived in Cornwall all his life. Here he pinpoints the best beaches for families with children Click to view Top 5 Cornish Family Beaches.

Best for Learning to Surf (Polzeath)

Cornish Family Beaches - Polzeath | MediumPolzeath, six miles from the north coast town of Wadebridge, is one of the finest surfing beaches in the world for beginners and intermediates. At low tide, there is a huge expanse of sand, rock pools and, occasionally, a school of dolphins arrive to keep swimmers company.

The best surf school on the beach is Surf's Up! (01208 862003). It’s where my family and I have learnt to surf with patient, fun instructors, good equipment and wet suits (if required).

Cornish Family Beaches - Polzeath | SmallThe company is run by Pete and Jane Craske, who have a wealth of surfing and teaching experience. This school guarantees that you will be standing on a board, riding a wave, by the end of the first lesson - or you get your money back. Everyone we know, even our least sporty friends, has made the grade.

Lessons are two and a half hours long, cost £20 and are spread throughout the day. Due to Polzeath's excellent sea conditions, it is rare that sessions are ever cancelled but it is advisable to book at least a week ahead during the summer months.

Cornish Family Beaches - Polzeath | MediumThe beach holds a British Seaside Award and an even more prestigious Blue Flag Award, which recognises excellent beaches throughout Europe and those that contribute to public awareness of environmental issues.

Another accolade that Polzeath has acquired is to be named one of the world's top 25 beaches by The Sunday Times Travel magazine in June 2006.

The only down side with Polzeath is that it does get crowded during the holiday season. You will have to jostle for your bit of sand amongst windbreaks and surfboards but, in a way, that’s part of the fun.

When locals get fed up with the crowds they use the cafes and shops in Polzeath, but then head around the corner to a quieter, smaller and lesser known beach called “Baby Bay”, next to New Polzeath.

But on a warm evening, I regard it as "compulsory" to return and end the day watching the sun go down, with glass in hand, on the terrace at the Atlantic Hotel.
