Best for Peace and Quiet (Gwithian) |
 |
If you would like to see seals then this is the one. Situated on the north coast of Cornwall in the picturesque St Ives Bay, this beautiful three-mile stretch of pale sand is big enough to accommodate everyone, even in the height of summer. |
| |
| The best-kept secret about Gwithian, near Hayle, is that if you walk to Godrevy, and then along the cliff for less than a mile, you will almost certainly see a colony of seals in the tiny bay below. |
| |
Gwithian beach itself is ideal for families and offers first-aid facilities as well as a lifeguard in season. For those who enjoy surfing, this is a superb beach when the conditions are right, with the waves breaking best between low and mid-tide. |
| |
The beach is also popular for horse riding and has a restricted area for exercising your dog. It has won a 2006 Seaside Award for being well-managed, clean and safe.
The downside of it being such an unspoilt expanse of sand and beautiful dunes is that there is only one cafe, the Sunset Surf Shop & Cafe, and limited toilet facilities.
If you do not mind a short walk, there is free parking available ten minutes walk from the beach but, otherwise, there is a pay car park located just above the beach. There is always plenty of space. |
