Ursula Seymour - Phil and Teds E3 Double - Independent, Expert Reviews at ProductSifter - We hunt down the best so you don't have to
There's an astonishing choice of pushchairs, prams, strollers and buggies for transporting your baby. Ursula Seymour, who writes for a range of magazines and newspapers including The Sunday Times, picks five of the very best Click to view Top 5 Pushchairs.

Best Double Buggy (Phil & Teds E3 Double)

Pushchairs - Phil and Teds E3 Double | SmallIf you have twins or two children close in age then a double buggy is essential, but choosing one is far from straightforward as there are so many options to consider. Our choice is the Phil & Teds E3 Double, but we also recommend the Maclaren Twin Techno if you want a side-by-side model.

A double buggy really is a must if you have twins or two children who are close in age, but there is a lot to consider when making your choice. The first decision is whether to go for a front and back design, where your children sit one behind the other, or a side by side design, where they sit next to each other.

Both designs have their benefits, a front and back design, like the Phil & Teds E3 Double makes for much easier manoeuvrability in shops and on busy streets, and is a good choice if you have a baby and an older child to transport as the baby can lay flat in the bottom of the pram, while the toddler sits in a buggy at the front. A side by side design is more awkward to push in crowded places and bulkier to store and fit in a car boot, but does ensure that both children can see out, and with the Maclaren Twin Techno, both babies can lie flat, which is ideal if you have twins.

We chose the Phil & Teds E3 buggy as our best double, as it's ideal for two children of different ages, but as the top, toddler seat, doesn't recline it isn't suitable for twins. However, as the most common reason for buying a double buggy is to wheel about children of different ages it won our recommendation.

It's a great mover

Pushchairs - Phil and Teds E3 Double | SmallIt's a real winner with the Babyworld.com reviewers too, winning five out of five stars, due to its compact size – it's not much bigger than a single buggy, so it's easy to manoeuvre and store: "The chassis is great because its no longer than the average single, which means it still fits on buses, in car boots [and] the house" says one user.

At 11kg its relatively lightweight too, which is a consideration when you are pushing two children around. It has also an all-terrain, three wheel design which makes for a smooth ride for your children. It is simple to remove one of the seats if you want to use the buggy as a single-seater and folding it down is just as easy, requiring just a couple of clicks of a button.

The innovative and compact design of the Phil & Teds E3 has won it a Silver award from Mother & Baby magazine in its 2006/7 awards as well as plenty all the praise from mums. But as well as the inability to fully recline the toddler seat, and the restricted view of the back seat passenger its other major downside is the price. At over £300 this double buggy isn't cheap.

Twin transport

Pushchairs - Phil and Teds E3 Double | SmallAs we mentioned, for mothers with twins who want a from-birth double buggy our recommendation is the Maclaren Techno Twin, basically the double version of our Best All-Rounder, the Maclaren Techno XT. This double buggy provides a lightweight – 11.7kg – side by side option that can be used for two newborns.

The disadvantage of any side-by-side buggy is that it takes up more space on the pavement and in the car boot. Getting into small shop doorways can be awkward, if not impossible, and they can be hard to manoeuvre. However, on the plus side the Maclaren Techno Twin has all the advantages of its single counterpart, including price tag that's over £100 less than the Phil & Teds E3 at £199.
