Best Second Bike (Puky) |
 |
Ready for a bike with pedals? There are hundreds, but most are poorly made and will fall apart in no time. The Puky, however, is a brilliant bike, ideal for kids aged three to five. It’s solid, safe, fully adjustable and designed to make learning easy. The stabilizers will be off in days rather than weeks. |

| The Puky is another German-made bike and has a build quality and intelligence of design that puts most others of it’s type to shame. It's an ideal first bike for any child who did not have the pleasure of zooming round on a Like-a-Bike as a toddler and a great second bike for any child who did but is now ready for a bike with pedals. |

What makes the Puky so nice to learn on is its low centre of gravity and its easy to use brakes. There is no cross-bar, which makes it easy for any child to jump on or off; its small 12.5-inch wheels reduce ‘topple factor’; and its combination of front pull and back pedal brakes mean it is as easy to stop moving as it is to start. In short, the Puky is designed to build confidence fast and that is exactly what it does. |
Ideal for Learning |
Puky offers several models for young children, all of which are very well made and follow the same tried and tested single-gear design.
The Puky Z2 (top) is the smallest in the range and ideal for kids aged three to five. The Puky Z6 (above, left) is bigger and for children aged four to seven. The Puky ZL is a lighter aluminium version of the Z6.
My advice would be to go for the Puky Z2 at age three as this is when the design features of the bike really come into their own. If your kids are anything like mine, they will be nagging for a cooler-looking bike with gears by the time they are five or six anyway.
You will no doubt find cheaper learner bikes than the Puky but few, if any, offer the same build quality and design. They are great value for money - especially if you are planning more than one child.
