Ursula Seymour - Babysense II - Independent, Expert Reviews at ProductSifter - We hunt down the best so you don't have to
If you've got a baby you almost certainly want a baby monitor to keep tabs on your little darling while you're not in the same room. Here Ursula Seymour, who writes for a range of magazines and newspapers including The Sunday Times, picks five of the best Click to view Top 5 Baby Monitors.

Best Breathing Monitor (Babysense II)

Baby Monitors - Babysense II | MediumIt's every parent's worst nightmare – your baby stops breathing in the night and you don't notice until it's too late. The Babysense II is medically proven to help to prevent this by monitoring both your baby's breathing and movement, and alerting you if it spots any irregularities.

During the first year of its life a baby is most at risk from SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome). One of the causes of this is thought to be central apnoea. Symptoms of central apnoea include slowing or cessation of both breathing and motion.

The Babysense II has been used for over 10 years in hospitals and homes to pick up on the early signs of central apnoea and is the only baby monitor to be certified as a medical device.

It works in a different way from any other monitor too. It contains two sensor panels which are laid underneath your baby's mattress so neither touches your baby directly. These are connected to a battery-operated control unit that attaches to the side of the cot. The sensors then monitor your baby's breathing and motion patterns.

Safety first

Baby Monitors - Babysense II | SmallIt will sound a loud alarm to alert parents if baby stops breathing for more than 20 seconds or if the breathing rate drops below 10 breaths a minute. It comes with instructions that explain what you should do if the alarm sounds.

If breathing sounds are normal it displays a flashing green light to give you peace of mind.

While parents may be pleased with other baby monitor's this one can actually save lives. As one mum explains: "When the alarm went off we went quickly to our seven-month-old daughter's room and she wasn't breathing. We woke her and she started breathing with some vigorous rubbing and encouragement. We don't like to think what might have happened without the Babysense monitor."
