30GB iPod

Ursula Seymour - 30GB iPod - Independent, Expert Reviews at ProductSifter - We hunt down the best so you don't have to
There are other MP3 players but the iPod's style and download system means it reigns supreme. Ursula Seymour, who writes for PC Advisor, Mac World, Computer Buyer and The Sunday Times among others, picks the best of the range Click to view Top 5 iPods.

Best All-Rounder (30GB iPod)

iPods - 30GB iPod | MediumIf you're into your music but you're not an audio nut, if you want to watch videos but only the odd clip here and there, if you want to store pictures but not your entire album - and you don't want to spend the earth to do it - then the 30GB iPod is for you.

The 30GB iPod has almost all the bells and whistles offered by our ultimate 80GB iPod but without the top of the range price tag. You do have to make a few compromises to save this cash but you won't lose anything you can't live without.

Clearly the most obvious area where your money is saved is in capacity. You get 50GB less, which translates as being able to store 7,500 songs rather than 20,000. But let's be honest, not many of us has either the time or inclination to listen to a library of more than a few thousand songs anyway. Equally, you can only store 40 hours of video, but again a 2.5in screen isn't the ideal medium to watch movies, so this isn't too much of a problem.

A Balanced Choice

iPods - 30GB iPod | MediumThe other area where you have to downgrade from what's on offer in the higher capacity iPod is battery life. Instead of offering 20 hours for music playback and 6.5 hours for video, it offers 14 and 3.5 hours respectively, but again these are cutbacks you can accept for the price.

The styling of the 30GB iPod is identical to its big brother, and again you can choose from a black or white finish, but due to the smaller hard drive its measurements are slightly smaller at 103.5x61.8x11mm and 136g. It uses USB to connect to either a Mac or a PC.

Sleek Looks

iPods - 30GB iPod | SmallIt's hard to find fault with this iPod, which is why we chose it as our best all rounder. As iPod expert and Playlist editor in chief Chris Breen says: "It's hard not to like this iPod. Even if you never use its video capabilities, you should be pleased with its sleek design, crisp display, intuitive interface, reasonable battery life and the myriad wonders we've come to expect from an iPod". PC Magazine's Michael Kobrin says "Video support is a very good addition to an already excellent music player."
