Best Hands Free (Reacta Alarm, £9.00) |
 |
This battery powered alarm is shaped to fit snugly into the palm of your hand. Slightly more technical than the Shriek, you can put it on ‘stand-by’ when walking alone. This means it will go off even if you are given no warning of an attack. It’s also recommended by the Suzy Lamplugh trust. |
| |
A high percentage of attacks happen from behind according to personal safety experts, which means you might be given little or no chance to sound a regular alarm.
This is where the Reacta comes into its own: using the latest sensor technology it can be set so it sounds automatically if the alarm is separated from your hand. Alternatively you can switch it to a normal push button setting. |

The Recta has another trick: along with the noise, a bright flashing light comes on when it is activated. This, says Jo Walker of the Suzy Lamplugh Trust, will add to an attacker's shock and confusion. At 138 decibels, the Recta packs a considerable punch but is very light and compact alarm which is designed especially to fit snugly into the palm of your hand. “It is robust enough to continue operating even if thrown to the ground”, adds the Trust.
If you want to make sure it’s always to hand and not lost in the bottom of your handbag, you can use the belt clip which it comes with it. This might be especially useful if you’re travelling abroad and always want it nearby.
The Recta comes with a personal safety booklet and in a choice of colours. It runs on batteries and measures 10.2cm x 5.6cm x 2.6cm. |
