Personal safety alarms are an excellent way to protect yourself while out alone, says Rachel Mostyn, a former news editor of Cosmopolitan magazine. Click to view Top 5 Personal Safety Alarms.

Best in Simplicity (Personal Shriek Alarm, £6.50)

Personal Safety Alarms - Personal Shriek Alarm | SmallThis gas powered alarm is one of the most simple and easy to use on the market. It makes a deafening noise and is one of only two alarms recommended by the personal safety charity the Suzy Lamplugh Trust. What you see is what you get.

There are no fancy features with the Shriek alarm, just a straight forward deafening sound which is enough to give your would be attacker a heart attack let alone a bit of a fright.

The 138 decibel ringing sound is activated by hitting it hard against your hand or any part of your body, so you don’t have to waste time fiddling with buttons.

Personal Safety Alarms - Personal Shriek Alarm | MediumIt emits a continuous high pitched screech which makes it quite distinct from a car alarm, which is important.

“Although the point of a personal safety alarm is to shock your attacker and give you a moment to get away, with this one the sound is so different to a car or burglar alarm that if there is someone in the area then they might just be alerted to your situation,” says Jo Walker spokesperson for the Suzy Lamplugh Trust.

A possible disadvantage with the Shriek is that the alarm measures 13.6cms x 3.3cms, which may be a bit big for some. Also, you need gas refills which you cannot take on some planes and are not as easy as ordinary batteries to replace.

Nevertheless the London Evening Standard newspaper points out that the Shriek is “light and small enough to fit snugly in the hand” and the Suzy Lamplugh trust calls it “one of the most effective alarms on the market”.

The Shriek alarm comes with an easy-to-read instruction leaflet and a Personal Safety booklet that includes tips on how to avoid an attack.

It’s an excellent product, very simple to use and, at just £6.50, great value.

Pros:
- Nice and simple
- Very loud
- Distinct sound
- Good value

Cons:
- Larger than some
- Requires gas refills
