Ursula Seymour - Sony Vaio VGN SZ2M B - Independent, Expert Reviews at ProductSifter - We hunt down the best so you don't have to
A laptop computer can transform your home and working life. But which is best for you? Ursula Seymour, who writes for PC Advisor, Mac World, Computer Buyer and The Sunday Times among others, picks five of the very best Click to view Top 5 Laptop Computers.

Best Ultraportable (Sony Vaio VGN-SZ2M/B)

Laptop Computers - Sony Vaio VGN SZ2M B | MediumUltraportable laptops are niche products designed to appeal to road warriors who want a genuinely portable yet powerful computer. You will pay a premium for this combination, but Sony's Vaio VGN-SZ2M/B pulls it off with aplomb.

Once was the time when opting for an ultraportable laptop mean seriously compromising on features and performance, but Sony has managed to create a good balance between the two in the Vaio. Weighing just 1.85kg and measuring just 315x234x24mm it still offers a 13.3in screen, which is generous in an ultraportable.

A user review on website Notebook review says: "It combines extreme performance in an exceptionally lightweight package."

Stamina and Speed

Laptop Computers - Sony Vaio VGN SZ2M B | MediumTo back up its larger screen it has two speed options, which you can toggle between – stamina and speed. In stamina mode it uses a basic built in card to power the graphics, which means longer battery life, but poorer application performance and appearance. In speed mode it uses a standalone graphics card to offer improved performance, although battery life is shorter. Using the power saving stamina option Sony says the Vaio can manage around five hours battery life.

The standalone graphics card option twinned with a larger screen means that unlike many of its rivals the Vaio can even be used to play games. Computer Shopper, which awarded it four stars says it's: "the only [ultraportable] notebook . . . capable of running modern games".

Other specifications include a 1.6GHz Intel dual core processor (which means it uses two processors to offer better performance when you are working on multiple tasks), 2GB of memory, which will further enhance performance. For storage there's an 80GB hard drive and a combined CD and DVD writer, while built in wireless connectivity allows you to link up to the internet from anywhere. There is also a built in slot to read the contents of Sony's Memory Stick memory cards. All you will need to keep you working while you are on the road.

The whole package is wrapped up in Sony's award winning design, with a carbon fibre case offering a great combination of durability and portability. "The use of aluminium and carbon fibre make it stand out as something a bit special", says Notebook review.com.
