Best Ultimate (Sony Vaio VGN-AR21S) |
 |
Sony's Vaio VGN-AR12S really does sit at the cutting edge of laptop technology, packed with high-end features and with a budget-busting pricetag to match - but if you're looking for the ultimate laptop, you've found it. (Compare Prices) |

This is a genuine home entertainment laptop with a massively powerful set of features to match, plus plenty of brand new technology to set it well above the crowd. Thanks to this combination it has made a big impression, winning awards from both gadget magazine T3 and techie website TrustedReviews.
Perhaps the most interesting thing about this laptop is that it includes a Blu-Ray disc drive. Blu-Ray technology hopes to take over from DVD as the new high capacity storage format, and Sony is championing its cause in the AR21S. It is a big step up from DVD, although you can still play all your old DVDs and CDs in a Blu-Ray drive.
Blu-Ray offers a much higher capacity than DVD – up to 50GB on a dual layer disc, because of the increased storage space it can easily handle higher quality audio and HD (High Definition) movies. The laptop is fully HD ready, so you can both watch these super sharp movies on its 17in widescreen display, or thanks to the addition of the HDCP enabled HDMI port, hook it up to your HD ready TV and watch them there instead.

Future-Proof |
The AR21S is loaded with Microsoft's Media Centre software, its home entertainment version of Windows. So everything you need for watching movies, burning discs, organising video and music is preloaded. It's also ready for the latest version of Windows, Vista, which is due out next year, so you can easily upgrade.
It also comes bundled with a range of audio, video and imaging software so you will have everything you need to get started without spending any more money, a good thing at this price point.
The technical specification is impressive, with a 2GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor, 2GB of memory and a massive 200GB hard drive. It has built in wireless connectivity and a built in Ethernet port, so you can hook it up to your work network with ease.
This really is the ultimate laptop, as TrustedReviews says: "What you've got here is a superb Media Centre PC, with all the components to allow it to be the centre of your high-definition entertainment setup. [You're] getting not just cutting edge, but potentially future proof technology here – once Blu-ray movies start to appear". (Compare Prices) |
