Pure is the brand to turn to for digital radio, as the rest of our selection reveals. It has a radio to suit most tastes, but the Evoke 3 is definitely the audiophile's choice. It's an award-winning product. It was selected as What Hi Fi?'s Radio Product of the Year for 2006, described as "the best portable digital radio in the world", by Stuff magazine, while T3 handed it a gold award, calling it "the best DAB radio we've come across".

So why has this radio attracted so much praise? Because it's offers an unbeatable combination of high end features, top quality audio and ease of use. It sports a retro design much favoured by many DAB radios, with a dark, faux cherry wood case and a silver grey control panel. Whether or not you like the look is subjective, but it's certainly well built, which is the main thing. (Compare Prices) |
Auto Tune |
When you first get started with the radio it will auto tune up to 99 DAB radio stations in about 30 seconds, so it's easy for first timers to get it up and running. But where the fun really starts is with the ReVu technology that allows you to pause and rewind live programmes, in much the same way as Sky+ users can manipulate live TV. You can also record programmes to the supplied 64MB SD card, which fits in a slot at the bottom of the control panel. You can also listen to recorded MP3 files held on an SD card via the radio. The Evoke-3 includes a broadcast Electronic Programme Guide (EPG), which provides you with seven-days worth of programme scheduling for participating stations, so you can use the radio's timer system to set it to come on automatically and to record a future programme while you are out and about.
It has 20 timers, so you need never miss a favourite show again, and if you want to store more than the SD card can hold, you can plug in a separate recording device via the optical digital output. A free and simple alternative to podcasts. (Compare Prices) |
Stereo Sound |
This version comes with dual speakers so you can enjoy stereo radio, something which many other units require an extra, bolt-on speaker to achieve. You can plug in an external device such as an iPod or MiniDisc player via the AUX port, so the unit can double up as a speaker unit. Sound quality is excellent, with rich, deep bass tones often missing from DAB radios.
It features 20 programmable alarms, so you can set it up to wake you with a buzzer or preset station each morning, either at the same time or varying times if you work shifts, as well as setting a later alarm for weekends. This is really flexible, and is easy to programme using the buttons on the front. The handle on the top of the radio acts as a snooze button, so just give it a squeeze for an extra few minutes sleep. It also comes with a remote which can also be used to carry out any programming.

Easy to Read |
All the station and programme information is easy to read on the six-line LCD screen on the front of the unit. If you live outside of the DAB broadcast area it also supports FM RDS radio, so you can store up to 24 preset stations and view details on them onscreen. It also supports DAB Band III and L-Band so you can use it around the world if you want to lug its 290x210x120mm bulk around in your suitcase.
It can be powered by mains or six C batteries. There is an optional ChargePAK rechargeable battery pack that provides around 15 hours playback for £29.99. It is backed by a two year warranty and if there are any updates to its onboard software it can be simply updated using the USB port. (Compare Prices) |
