Best Kitchen Radio (Dualit DAB Kitchen Radio)

Digital Radios - Dualit DAB Kitchen Radio | MediumThe Dualit DAB Kitchen Radio allows you to have top-quality digital radio in your kitchen without making any compromises when it comes to style. Dualit, the maker of high-class kitchen equipment for homes and the catering industry, has lent its trademark chrome and colour finishes to this beautifully robust radio.

Dualit is a name that any style-conscious cook will know - it's synonymous with those covetable, industrially designed chrome toasters found in every fashionable kitchen. Now the company has turned its hand to creating a digital radio, to provide you with crackle-free listening while you cook up a feast.

Digital Radios - Dualit DAB Kitchen Radio | SmallYou might have expected a kitchen equipment maker to fall flat on its face when it switched from loaves to listeners, but you'd be wrong. The Dualit Kitchen Radio has won praise at every turn. It is rated as excellent on the Cnet reviews site, winning an editor's top-rated placing, while gadget site Lordpercy says "the design oozes quality and the audio experience is up there with the best".

The thing that sets this radio apart and makes it particularly suitable for the hostile environment of a kitchen – think water and food spillages, never a good mix with electronic equipment – is the build quality. It has taken a leaf out of the toaster design book and is as tough as nails. Cnet says "it's the toughest [digital radio] we've ever used".

Digital Radios - Dualit DAB Kitchen Radio | SmallIt comes in four finishes; the standard chrome, black, red or cream, and all weigh a ton. Well, not literally, but at over two and half kilos this is no lightweight. Part of this weight could be due to the internal, rechargeable battery which provides around four hours of playback in digital mode, although it will probably last a bit longer for less power-hungry FM. It can also be mains powered.

Easy to Use

It's pretty easy to use and auto tuning is simple and fast. There are only five presets for tuning in your favourite stations, but you can scroll through stations using the rotary controls and select the ones you want at a click of a button. The controls and LCD display are all found on the top of the radio.

Digital Radios - Dualit DAB Kitchen Radio | MediumIt has an AUX in port, so you can hook up your MP3 player and listen to it via the single speaker.

While it's lacking in the high-end bells and whistles found on many of the Pure units, such as an electronic programme guide or recording features, it does have everything you would need for a kitchen radio, including a timer so you can use it to help you cook to perfection. If you decide to go against the grain and move it upstairs to your bedroom, there is also an alarm mode to wake you up in the morning.

The Dualit Kitchen Radio is the ideal combination of robust, yet stylish design, plus ease of use and excellent audio quality.
