Best family (Canon Pixma iP4300) |

A family printer has to be an all-round workhorse that can output great quality photos, but take printing text in its stride. It should also be easy to use and relatively inexpensive. This is why we picked the Canon Pixma iP4300 printer as our best family photo printer. (Compare Prices) |

The Pixma iP4300 is an award-winning printer, picking up a Best Buy gong from Computer Shopper magazine this year. This is thanks to its combination of features, fast text printing and good quality photo output.
It also offers you flexibility in terms of the size of photos you want to print. Unlike the two PictureMate printers the Pixma iP4300 can print up to A4 size, so you can do extra large prints if you want to.
It uses four of its five inks for colour printing, the fifth is an extra black for text printing and thanks to its use of tiny droplets of ink results are precise. Tech website cnet says in its review "all of our photos were clear and detailed". It's a fast performer too, taking about one and half minutes to print a top quality A4 photo.

It uses two paper trays so you can store your glossy photo paper in one and plain paper for text in the other and toggle between the two as necessary. Text output is just as good as photo printing, with crisp, clear characters. This printer also includes an extra not found on many models at this price point – an auto-duplexing unit. In layman's terms this means it's easy to do double sided printing. One feature that makes it particularly attractive to a family is the useful software bundle that's thrown in for free. This makes a great introduction to photo editing, allowing you to carry out simple tasks like red eye removal and image trimming. There are also tools to help you print from the web and create labels for CD and DVD discs. (Compare Prices) |
