Kyle Ackerman - Quake 4 - Independent, Expert Reviews at ProductSifter - We hunt down the best so you don't have to
First-person shooters are among the most popular of computer games and there are masses to choose from. Here Kyle Ackerman, one of America's most prolific games journalists and a regular contributor to PC Gamer and Computer Games magazine, picks five of the best Click to view Top 5 First Person Shooters.

Best Online Deathmatch FPS (Quake 4)

First Person Shooters - Quake 4 | MediumOnline deathmatch is the ultimate game mode for those who have more faith in their own reflexes than in the cooperation of strangers. If you want to climb the ladder of professional gaming, or just prove that your trigger finger is the twitchiest, Quake 4 is currently the game to beat.

Games that specialize in online deathmatch pit you, the player, against one or more opponents. The winner is the one with the most kills at the end of the match. That's it.

First Person Shooters - Quake 4 | SmallThese are games of speed and reflexes. Study the maps well and know your weapons so that you can be competitive, lest you immediately fall (time after time) to your online competitors. Simply speaking, this is a genre in which players prove their knowledge of the game and their raw hand-to-eye coordination.

The Spoils Go to the Twitchiest!

Ultimately, of all the options available, Quake 4 is the best choice because it has an active online community, a decent single-player experience (to serve as a warm-up for its brutal deathmatch) and an active professional gaming community to give the best players a money-making outlet for their skills. While the online competitive community for the game is at its best on the PC, it is also available for the Xbox 360.

First Person Shooters - Quake 4 | MediumIf you plan to experience the joys and horrors of deathmatch, make sure that you take the time to practice, developing your skills against AI foes, and expect to set aside time to practice and to make a name for yourself online. If you are considering a gift, these games can be great options for someone who has completely conquered offline games or jumped into more than a few online matches. While it can be difficult, nothing matches the challenge of a human opponent, making online deathmatch an extremely satisfying challenge, for those looking to push their skills to the limit.

Keep in mind, though, that Quake 4 is currently a king on a precarious throne. There haven't been a lot of contenders in the deathmatch category recently, and more are scheduled for release, soon. Keep an eye out for the next Unreal game, currently scheduled to hit store shelves later in 2007.
