American buyers are admittedly moving increasingly towards smaller models, but in Europe the 4x4 is still something of an icon. |

 Buying a new 4x4 needn’t mean losing sight of your environmentally conscious principles, however. Many of today’s models are no bigger, no thirstier and no more polluting than a good many conventional cars. And with increasing numbers of manufacturers moving towards alternative fuels for future generations of 4x4s, it seems the genre is here to stay.
When buying any new or used 4x4, don’t lose sight of your own requirements. Are you looking for a vehicle with genuine off-road capability, for example, or one that’s going to spend 99 per cent of its time on tarmac? Do you need room for the kids, the dog and the holiday luggage or is it simply a second car you’re after? And if you’re used to driving a low-slung sports car as your everyday transport, are you really prepared for the differences in handling and roadholding you’ll experience by opting for a 4x4?

Spacious, versatile and tough enough for just about any task, today’s 4x4s make superb family transport – as increasing numbers of buyers will testify.
