Hummer H2

Paul Guinness - Hummer H2 - Independent, Expert Reviews at ProductSifter - We hunt down the best so you don't have to
Motoring journalist Paul Guinness, a former editor of 4x4 Mart, has been reviewing off-roaders for more than 20 years for leading British newspapers and magazines. Here he steers you to the very best Click to view Top 5 Off Road Vehicles.

The Ultimate in Bling (Hummer H2)

Off Road Vehicles - Hummer H2 | MediumIf you’re the king of bling and you want the utimate 4x4 for cruisin’ the city streets, there’s really only one choice. Forget your blacked-out Range Rovers and your uprated Porsche Cayennes. For you, dude, only a Hummer will do.

The sad news for Hummer fans everywhere is that, from 2007, the original version – the simply monstrous H1 – has been discontinued for civilian use. So unless you’re best friends with a US Army General, you won’t be able to get yourself a brand spanking new Hummer H1 any longer.

Off Road Vehicles - Hummer H2 | SmallDon’t get too upset, though, because the smaller H2 and H3 models are still very much with us. In fact, imports to the UK are set to start in 2007, enabling British buyers to pop down to their nearest dealers and get the same bling-bling image as all those record producers, rap stars and sex industry moguls over in the States. Oh, ain’t life great?

So which Hummer should you go for? Well, it’s got to be the H2. I mean, the H3 is just WAY too small if maximum attention is the name of the game. And it’s also got to be the most expensive H2 – which in the USA means the $59,000 H2 Luxury. Then you simply add on such essential extras as black paintwork, self-levelling air suspension, chrome wheels and a general assortment of glitz and glam, and before you know it your final bill has risen to the best part of $70,000. How cool is that?

Unique Looks

Off Road Vehicles - Hummer H2 | MediumThe whole point about owning a Hummer is that you’ll be cruising those mean city streets at low speeds. After all, what’s the point of going fast when you want to be seen? Even so, it’s good to know there’s a 6.0-litre V8 under the hood should you need to step on the gas, with up to 325bhp lurking under your right foot. And it’s useful to have all that power, bearing in mind that even the "compact" Hummer H2 measures just a shade under 17 feet in overall length.

No other 4x4 looks like a Hummer, which is surely a good enough reason for splashing out on one. Hummer themselves would agree: "In a world where SUVs have begun to look like their owners, complete with love handles and mushy seats, the H2 proves that there is still one out there that can drop and give you 20".

If grabbing the headlines is what you’re about, a brand new Hummer H2 has to be the one. For that reason alone, it’s the ultimate. Of course, trying to find a big enough parking space in London might just take the shine off things …

WHY TO BUY - It's unique, it's enormous and it makes a great big statement about you

BEAR IN MIND - Parking can be problematic

TYPICAL PRICES - $59,000-$70,000+ / £30,000-£45,000+
