Is there anywhere in the world that an E-type could go unrecognised? With its sleek looks, long nose and short tail it’s become the definition of a classic car, and the barometer of their values. Prices are steadily on the rise, back to pre-boom and bust 1989 levels, and now good roadsters command £50,000 and up.
In a word, Bullitt. What else could Steve McQueen have driven on the streets of San Francisco than a '68 Mustang 390GT? Well, if the film had been made two years earlier, Frank Bullitt would have had the even more appealing original ponycar, launched in '64. But all Mustangs up to the "breadvan" of 1971 are cool.

It's run close by more chic fare such as Fiat's 124 Spider – but the MG’s basic toughness, reliability and spares supply means it's the logical choice if you've got miles to cover, rain or shine.
